Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off Finale

AHHHHHHH! It's the final episode! I don't know what I am going to do with myself on Monday nights. Well, next week, I know I'll be watching the Sing Off Holiday Special. But beyond that… sadness.

Tonight, it comes down to the top three groups: Pentatonix, Dartmouth Aires, and Urban Method. Excitement is boiling over!

Now, normally I would decry the whole two-hour-show-for-a-two-minute-result thing. But, because this is all about a cappella, I really don't mind :) Bring on the music!

To open the show, the groups sing Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" - an awesome arrangement that even leaves room for Myke to rap. There are simply too many fabulous moments in this song to mention. This is gonna be a crazy awesome show!

I love that the show has the finalists focusing on causes near to their hearts. First off, we see the members of Pentatonix working with an organization that helps bullied youth (The Trevor Project). And now they're gonna blow us away with "Without You" by David Guetta feat. Usher. It's obvious that these five were meant to sing together. The harmonies between Scott, Mitch and Kirstie are always tight and locked in. And they are always complemented so well by the Meat and Potatoes, Avi & Kevin, on the bass and drums. Win or not, they have been seen by the world and will go far with their perfect combination.

Wait, did Nick just say he finally gets to do a 98 Degrees song on the show????

Vocal Point!!! Oh, and one of my favorite performances that they did. Croon it, Jake!!! And McKay looks so freakin' happy, as usual!!! Oh how I have missed them :)

Next up, Urban Method spends time with families who have been affected by sickle cell disease (Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California), like group members Kim & Myke. They hit the stage with "Stereo Hearts" by Gym Class Heroes feat. Adam Levine. Gonna take this time now to say that I have not been as big a fan of Urban Method as I am of the other finalists (or a few other groups that have left us already). But you have to admit that their group chemistry is kind of charismatic - they bring us in when they perform. Even when it's not perfect.

Finally, the Dartmouth Aires spent the day hanging out with stroke survivors (Saving Strokes), with Michael getting to share his own experience with his mother's post-stroke rehab. In their dramatic fashion, they bring us Meatloaf's "Paradise By The Dashboard Light." And they add a special guest appearance by Delilah's Amy Whitcomb :) These guys always have some sort of unexpected dramatic twist in their songs - sometimes it's in their choreo, sometimes it's in their lyrics, and sometimes it's built in to the harmonies. But they never fail to keep us on the edge of our seats and that is why they have made it to the finale.

I am beyond excited about all of the things Nick just said was upcoming… ALL of the ladies in one song and ALL of the guys in one song!!!!!!!! :)

"Give me just one night… una noche." :) Watching Nick Lachey dance is gonna be worth it. And I love that Ben is taking over hosting duties while Nick sets up on stage!!!! (lol, "the stallion of The Sing Off" ha!) I definitely dig the arrangement. Have I mentioned that 98 Degrees was my boyband of choice? My friends loved BSB and 'Nsync, but I loved those Lachey boys (particularly Drew) and their buddies. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE this arrangement! And Kirstie speaking her saucy Spanish right before that sick breakdown… HOT. But I think my absolute favorite part was the final run of the chorus, when Pentatonix was speed singing (awesome vocalese, baby)!

Welcome back, Deltones!

I love Sara Bareilles. The highlight of my Sing Off viewing last season was being in studio during the finale and seeing her perform "King of Anything" with The Backbeats. So, anything that equals her being on stage makes me happy. Sara & Urban Method are performing her newest single, "Gonna Get Over You." Sara sounds as fabulous as ever. And Urban Method frames her voice perfectly. (I'm gonna say it: a definite a improvement over the last two years's female judge performer… you know you were thinking it!) It's the sweetest performance, really. So fun!

Afro-Blue!!!!! I know I just saw them last week, but I miss them. Muchly.

Every time Ben Folds mixes with a group on this show, I smile super wide. And I love that he's adding the audience to the show!!!! Oh how I wish I could have been there! The Aires are the perfect group to back Ben up on "Not The Same" - just as fun-loving. I am still LOVING that the audience plays a dramatic role in the song :) And I think I just spied my favorite Yellowjacket taking his role as "audience chorister" seriously! Ben is the best. Seriously, who else could teach an audience to sing in harmony in ten seconds?

YELLOWJACKETS!!!! Aaron!!!!! Wave that flag, boys! I've missed them!

Hello, ladies! It's been a hot season for estrogen on The Sing Off… I am so excited for this take on Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman"!!! "Girls rule! Yeah, duh." Seriously, I don't have words to express the amazingness of this performance. So much ear candy in one song!

North Shore!!!! Oh, Guy… I've missed you :)

Okie dokie, boys… you'd better bring it! This is gonna render me speechless. I mean, I am in love with every voice on that stage. And, really, all you need to do is add a McKay smile and an Aaron high note and I'm good. "Born To Run" by Bruce Springsteen is such an awesome pick for these guys to sing. I love that they start with Scott and Michael out front. Have I mentioned how much I enjoy watching them all go crazy on stage?

More than 1 million online views of "Grenade"? Not surprised. :) Delilah rocks!

Smokey Robinson. We're talking amazing. And Afro-Blue gets to sing with him. PERFECT pairing! "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" sounds fabulous. (I think it's a better performance than the last time Smokey graced the Sing Off stage - in season one, he sang "Tracks of my Tears" with NOTA.) This whole performance is sick! (Reggie's bass… I was grinning with every note… LOVE him.)

The Collective! I've missed them. I hope they make it out to CA to do a solo show sometime… I'd buy that ticket!

It's time to find out who placed where. Our third place group is… Urban Method. Like I've mentioned above, I'm not as big on these guys as the other groups. I will admit to being surprised that they've made it to the finale. But I will also say that I do think they're super talented! They're just not my cup of tea. Diddy's "Coming Home" serves as their swan song as they leave the Sing Off stage.

It's down to the Dartmouth Aires and Pentatonix. (Kirstie looks sick with nerves… I can't imagine being in their place! Oh, and have you noticed… she is the only girl on stage. And the first girl in Sing Off history to make it to the final two!) After giving us one more look at each group's journey, we are given the obligatory torturous final commercial break before we come back for the results. (I mean, really? Enough, already!) Who is it gonna be???????

PENTATONIX!!!!!!! I've kinda been saying it since I first saw them perform. When I met Avi, that was one thing I said. "You guys are totally gonna win this."

And they earned it. Boy did they ever.

Don't forget to tune in next week for The Sing-Off Christmas special, "A Sing-Off Christmas"!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Ten

It's time for an awesome penultimate episode filled with crazy awesome mixes, judges' choices, and down-to-the-wire drama as we decide who America will have to vote for this week! (AKA "Sarah finally knows nothing more than the general viewing public knows!")

Opening Number: "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve, "Last Friday Night" by Katy Party, "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani & "Baba O'Riley" by The Who
I love the master mix of these four songs… LOVE. And I remember loving when Scott came in with the bridge on Baba O'Riley that night. Such a sweet break in the wall of sound!

MASTER MIXES
Pentatonix: “Forget You,” Cee-Lo Green vs. “Since U Been Gone,” Kelly Clarkson
Dear Kevin, do you want me to say it? THIS IS THE GROUP THAT NEEDS TO WIN! Seriously. How can they doubt their awesomeness? Especially with a beatbox like Kevin and a bass like Avi the beast! But I think what I loved most about this performance was that they gave it a story that played out not only in their lyrics, but in their choreography. The pairing of songs was actually perfect and the arrangement was out of this world amazing!

Urban Method: “Hot in Herre,” Nelly vs. “Fever,” Peggy Lee
Another fun pairing! I especially loved when they dropped down for "Fever" and the sax (Richard kinda rocks like that!) came in. Definitely a hot mix!

Afro-Blue: “I Believe I Can Fly,” R. Kelly vs. “Fly,” Nicki Minaj & Rihanna
They are gonna make me cry. I already can't listen to "I Believe I Can Fly" without weeping (for personal reasons) but the way that they mixed it with "Fly" melted me even more. Christie and Trent brought so much heart to what they were singing. And then Mariah worked in that rap without making it weird or taking away from their gorgeous jazzy sound. It was smooth blue! :)

Dartmouth Aires: “Born This Way,” Lady Gaga vs. “Sympathy for the Devil,” The Rolling Stones
This is such a dramatic performance, with the chaise and the fans. This is what these guys do best: they take great songs, turn them into awesome harmonies, and add a show component. Truly a treat for both the ears AND the eyes! Brendan and Michael = magic. I adore that one half of the group looks like the Warblers from Glee. :)
(Did anyone else wanna jump through the TV and give Ethan a hug? What a standup dude!)

The tension is building as we head to their final performances in their bid for a coveted final three spot!

JUDGES’ CHOICE
Pentatonix: “Dog Days Are Over,” Florence + the Machine
You know that these judges' choice songs are pretty perfect for each group. I mean, that's kind of the point. But this one was PERFECT for these guys. The dissonance in the opening harmonies, the sick percussion and bass, Scott's hot lead, Mitch's pure voice on that break down… it all adds up to goosebumps.

Urban Method: “All of the Lights,” Kanye West
Myke had to sing… he's not just a rapper! :) Tony played trumpet. They did this "woo woo" thing with their mics (and it was hot). Katie blew us away. A great way to close their bid for the final three!

Afro-Blue: “A Change Is Gonna Come,” Sam Cooke
(Personally, I think EVERY song needs a jazz chord, but that's just me, Shawn.)
Christie has got to be my favorite female voice from this whole competition. There, I said it. I LOVE HER VOICE. I love her soul, I love her power, I love her scatting. And Afro-Blue has held a special place in my heart since the beginning. I love the arrangement of this song. I mean, they took us to church, baby! (I'll buy that too, Ben!)

Dartmouth Aires: “Shout,” The Isley Brothers
Gonna be honest, I never thought that THIS group would be the all-male collegiate group that made it the farthest. (Yes, I thought it would be Vocal Point in the final, not the Aires.) THAT. WAS. A-MAH-ZING. I mean, wow. Splits (seriously, he can do splits and bend backwards and wow). Falling down on stage. Hot soloist. Hot harmonies. POWER. Just, wow.
(P.S. - I am so stealing "flarp," Shawn. Flat/Sharp. So using that from now on.)

We have a SING OFF!!! And I am going to be both happy and unhappy no matter the outcome because I don't want to see either of these groups leave. (P.S. - was kinda surprised that Pentatonix wasn't named before Urban Method. I thought they were more of a clinch than UM.)
Afro-Blue sings "American Boy" again, which I think was the best choice for them. And smart of them to make sure Christie's scat was still there. This was the song that made me love them to begin with!
The Dartmouth Aires sing "Somebody To Love" from their Queen medley. The first note was a skoosh weak, but then Michael made his magic again, even baffling his own bass :)
At this point, I'm in tears, cause they both sang phenomenally and both deserve the spot. I know I'm not gonna like any decision being made. Though, if you held a gun to my head and made me choose one, the jazz soul within me would scream Afro-Blue. It was hard to watch them go (still is, really - I am crying as I type this), but they made it a bit easier with their jazzy smooth take on their swan song, "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters. (I noted the night of the taping that Shawn looked pretty unhappy with the final result as well.)

Hey, we get treated to a live performance of the theme song!!!

I believe that Nick said the top ten groups will be part of the finale show… this means some of our old faves will be back. I know I am seriously looking forward to seeing Vocal Point, the Yellowjackets, and North Shore again (just to name a few)!

Don't forget that you can vote for your favorite to win by visiting www.nbc.com/sing-off/vote. Voting closes at 9am EST on Sunday, November 27th!

Join us next week for the Finale recap as we talk about all of the fun special performances. Who do you think is going to win this year? Will it be Pentatonix, Urban Method, or the Dartmouth Aires? Leave me a comment with your thoughts!

"AcaPolitics" Review

AcaPolitics
by Stephen Harrison
Review by blameCarla

I was excited to get this book and began reading it the day it came in the mail. Unfortunately, life intervened and I didn’t get to finish it until a little while later, while on the plane to Marathon Key for vacation in sunny Florida.

The book is about the a cappella community at a small college facing budget cuts, which is something that I think every school is now facing, and because of this, one or more groups funded by the school will be cut. It is also a work of fiction, with heroes, villains, drama (yeah, lots of drama), and a love triangle/quadrilateral of sorts: all the things you need for a successful novel.

I was pleasantly surprised at how fast and good of a read it was. It caught my attention right off the bat, held it, and kept me reading all the way though, and for me, that’s not an easy thing to achieve. If I can figure out the end by the first chapter (which in a way I did and did not), I put the book down.

The characters are three dimensional, if sometimes somewhat predictable, but their quirks make them far less cookie-cutter and much more entertaining. The descriptions of a cappella singing are interesting and insightful to non-singers, and I often found myself enjoying those parts of the novel more than the drama at times, but I’m a music geek anyway, since I spend a lot of time listening to a cappella music.

The love story is complicated and fairly typical, but again the characters make it more realistic. I enjoyed the twist on the “bad girl wants the guy first for other reasons, but falls for him anyway” motif.

In a nutshell, it’s a fun, fast-paced read that kept me interested throughout the whole novel. The story and characters are engaging and the setting of a college campus was perfectly portrayed. I am excited to read the sequel!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Nine

Opening Medley: "I Feel Good" - James Brown, "ABC" - Jackson 5, & "Crazy In Love" - Beyonce
It's The Sing Off Rhythm and Soul Review! The atmosphere in the studio that night was awesome! It was such a fun opener :)

Let's get going with this R&B super night!

CONTEMPORARY R&B
Dartmouth Aires: "Ignition" by R. Kelly
Full disclosure: I am not the biggest contemporary R&B fan. Love me the old school stuff. And I am not a fan of this song. BUT, whoa. Aires. Hot. I mean, Michael, Clark, Xavier… whoa.

Urban Method: "Knock You Down" by Keri Hilson feat. Ne-Yo and Kanye West
Katie. Girl. Crazy amazing vocals! I mean, let's be honest, it wasn't perfect. There were one or two pitch bobbles, but they didn't detract from the performance like they have in past weeks.

Vocal Point: "Every Little Step" by Bobby Brown
McKay has soul. And because he said so, I believe it. :) So, when I saw this live, I was kind of squealing. Keith sounded a-mah-zing! The dance moves made me so very happy. And Robert on the spoken bass solo - HECKS YES! And Tanner doing his break down thing - OMG!

Afro-Blue: "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey
I adore Christie's voice. I know Danielle gets featured a lot. And Danielle is great. But I LOVE Christie. I love the sultry sound of her voice. And I love the mix of the group on this piece. The bell tones into the final section were tight!

Pentatonix: "OMG" by Usher
Allow me to just pause for a second and just revel in the awesomeness that is Avi. OK, back to the song. They are awesome, as expected. And the breakdown was just fine as wine, baby.

I haven't mentioned recently how much I love our fabulous judges and host. It kinda goes without saying about now. I mean, if they are making you laugh, you know they're making me laugh :)

I am ready for the slow jams and tight grooves of my favorite old school R&B hits… are you? Let's do this!

CLASSIC R&B
Dartmouth Aires: "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight & The Pips
Michael gives me goosebumps when he sings. And I am loving the "Pips" behind him (I see you Clark, doing your adorable little "Pips" moves)! The groove was there and the song was beautiful.

Urban Method: "It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers
I loved their breakdowns of this song… and Richard, Tony, and Troy are all beasts! And the ladies were amazing :) (yes, Kim, that was awesome)

Vocal Point: "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by The Temptations
Ben!!!! Jake!!!! McKay!!!! Now, I'll admit that it's not their strongest showing, but I will ALWAYS be an avid Vocal Point fan. Especially when McKay growl-sings. I mean, what? ;)

Afro-Blue: "Best Of My Love" by The Emotions
Oh, but I do love this group. They are ON from the very first "ba dat" and keep it silky smooth the whole way through. Nothing more to say, I think. They definitely don't need my help to recommend them!

Pentatonix: "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye
Can I just say that I have been waiting since September 8th to be able to tell the world just how much I love this song! Sitting in my seat in the studio, I just about melted into a puddle in my seat. I mean, MELTED. It was HOT. So stinkin' HOT. From the moment that Mitch sang that "wawa", I knew we were in for a great performance. (P.S. - a song like this one only works if your bass can hack it. Avi is a beast.)

I had a sinking feeling about the Vocal Point elimination when I was in the studio based off of the judges comments after the second song. I am not ashamed to admit that I got a wee bit weepy. These guys were my faves when I first found out the groups. I know that in addition to missing their fun attitudes and amazing harmonies, I'm gonna miss seeing McKay's beaming smile on my tv every week! ;) They leave us with the memory of their amazing harmonies singing Michael Buble's "Home."

Can you believe that next week is the penultimate show?!?!?!

Short note before I sign off: the final two recaps may be a bit late. As I've mentioned before, I am a music student. And on the next two Monday nights, I have evening rehearsals for school. So, I'll be watching the episodes online as soon as I get a chance and recapping them ASAP. I am really looking forward to seeing how this thing ends!!!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Eight

Night 8 of the competition - it's really heating up!!!! We're ready for some rockin' country :) I know I am looking forward to reliving this week - I truly enjoyed it the first time! I also probably won't be as detailed in my recap tonight, but I do remember being very worried about a few groups this week.

Opening Number: "Wake Up" - Arcade Fire
The mix on this is awesome, the groups sound fabulous. And I just saw myself a couple of times :)

Classic Rock
Pentatonix: "Born To Be Wild" - Steppenwolf
The whole performance was just SICK from beginning to end. Especially anything Avi & Kevin managed to spit out - that was hot.

Dartmouth Aires: "We're Not Gonna Take It" - Twisted Sister
I do love me some Michael. Who am I kidding, I love them all. This song ROCKED.

Afro-Blue: "American Girl" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Let me say one thing first: they will probably never sing anything that makes me anything but happy. I love them. And I always will. And as a result, I won't always agree with the judges. I loved this. LOVED it. But hearing some of the judges comments had me worried about these guys.

Delilah: "Dream On" - Aerosmith
You know, I kind of remember this sounding better live. There were still pitch problems. And I am not a fan of scream singing (so, not the biggest Aerosmith fan either), but the arrangement was still powerful!

Urban Method: "Here I Go Again" - Whitesnake
I thought from the beginning that it was interesting to choose the minor key on this arrangement… my ears are still not sure that they like it. But you can't deny that they totally rocked it.

Vocal Point: "You Really Got Me" - The Kinks
Oh, Ross. :) Such a rockstar! I loved that they were up on platforms, like they were performing on Ed Sullivan or something. This was SMOKIN'!

Country
Dartmouth Aires: "Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy" - Big & Rich
You don't know how happy I am that someone did this song! This thing was staged like a Broadway show. Just insane! But I loved it. I wonder what the Muzik Mafia thinks… :) I certainly think it was the most entertaining performance of the night!

Afro-Blue: "Need You Now" - Lady Antebellum
I love when Christie sings. Love. And I love the tension in her duet with Trent. I mean, it's not technically their best performance, but it's still absolutely beautiful. (No matter how much I hate this song - it's so overplayed.) I won't lie - I teared up that night. And I'm a bit misty now.

Urban Method: "Before He Cheats" - Carrie Underwood
There were some serious HOT moments in this song. Serious. But there were also a few pitch issues. Though, a definite improvement on last week.

Delilah: "If I Die Young" - The Band Perry
Can we say "heart"? A few pitch problems over all, but Ingrid - wow.

Vocal Point: "Life Is A Highway" - Rascal Flatts
Ahhhhh, McKay. I've missed you. (and your adorable infectious grin.) :) And Keith!!!! And the harmonies. And the LINE DANCING! It was a tad fast, but whoa. Love.

Pentatonix: "Stuck Like Glue" - Sugarland
Loved it the first time. Love it now. Avi is a beast. Kevin rocks the house with his beats. Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch are a-mah-zing. (And for those of you unfamiliar with this song, the reggae breakdown is actually in the original song.)

While we're waiting for the results, I'd like to take the time to mention that I loved where we were sitting for this show… cause it's been really easy to find Shaina, myself, and my friend Jessica whenever they pan the audience. Always a thrill to see oneself on television! (pssst - we were sitting on Shawn's side of the room, right above the Sing Off sign over the exit)

SO GLAD I AM NOT A JUDGE. I was nervous for a the groups tonight, so nervous. And it's so hard to have to say goodbye to Delilah. May I use a Nick Lachey style pun here? They died young… it was hard to see them go now. They left us with their swan song, "Survivor" by Destiny's Child.

Next week, the top 5 take on R&B hits, both old & new, that are guaranteed to make your pulse race (trust me… it's a hot night for music)! And we'll play another round of "look for Sarah"! ;)

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Seven

Welcome to Week Seven of The Sing-Off! Can you believe it has been seven weeks already? *sigh* Tonight, our seven remaining groups taken on superstar medleys… and I was there, so believe me when I say "AWESOMESAUCE"! Let's get it started…

First off, that opener: oh my heavens! I know I saw it a few times live. And it was fabulous. But I am loving getting to see it again… from the different camera angles and closeups. :) Loving this spooky medley of Danny Elfman's "This Is Halloween," Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London," and Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters"!

Tonight, not only are we talking through the episode, but we're playing "spot Sarah and Shaina in the audience" :) We are also going to get a special performance from last year's winners, Committed!

Urban Method: Rhianna Medley (What's My Name, Umbrella, & Only Girl)
I remember watching this and thinking "it's not bad… but it's not stunning." The girls looked like they were giving it everything, but it still sounded kind of weak in the lead singer department until "Only Girl," where Katie finally started to sound loud and proud. I think the transitions were interesting and kind of fun. That's always the struggle with a medley: making sure the transitions aren't cheesy. And they made it work there. But still not their best week.

(Through the odd magic of television, I've just seen my mom in the audience again… and, again, she wasn't at this taping.)

Vocal Point: Elvis Medley (Don't Be Cruel, Can't Help Falling In Love, & Jailhouse Rock)
Mike rocks out the fabulous opening of their medley with "Don't Be Cruel" (that whole opening was just hot) and then Jake gets up there and croons against the beautiful background behind him. And then, here comes McKay. Have I mentioned lately how much I love this boy? The energy he sends is always more than enough for everyone in the studio… it's infectious!

Afro-Blue: Janet Jackson Medley (What Have You Done For Me Lately, When I Think Of You, & Miss You Much)
This was hot to me from the start. Especially the transition to "When I Think Of You" with Christie doing her awesomesauce scat thing. And the hot jazz chords thrown in pretty much everywhere. And when they ended with "that's the end?", for a second, we wondered if it was… and kinda wished it wasn't.

Dartmouth Aires: Queen Medley (Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, & Somebody To Love)
So, you've gotta understand that this night was the first time I saw these guys. (And Pentatonix.) What an introduction! Brendan rocked the "Killer Queen" with the funk it deserved leading into what was probably the best song this group could ever consider performing. It totally fits their theatrical style and could only be pulled off properly by a group of their size. And the transition into "Somebody To Love" with Michael on that single note was genius. Well played, Aires, well played.

Pentatonix: Britney Spears Medley (Oops… I Did It Again, Toxic, & Hold It Against Me)
I never thought I would enjoy Britney Spears so much. The little nod to BoyzIIMen there in the first part was awesome… and then they get "Toxic"! (The only Britney song that I like, for the record.) I love that they featured each of their soloists in this medley. I LOVE Kevin & Avi's HOT breakdown. Kevin is a rockstar and Avi is a BEAST! And then to end it by mashing up all three songs… *no words*

(P.S. - Had the pleasure of briefly meeting Avi on Friday night at a choral festival where we were both singing. Very down to earth dude, which I am sure is true of all them members of PTX. And it was kind of awesome to see him singing outside of the Sing Off context!)

Delilah: Alicia Keys Medley (Fallin', A Woman's Worth, & If I Ain't Got You)
Hannah's entrance on "Fallin'", keeping the verse low for the first half instead of singing up where the melody usually is… awesomeness. Kendall brought some extra soul while Jo… the fabulous Jo… kept up a sick bass beat. And then Amy, though she started a tad shaky on her solo, belted that baby out and gave me goosebumps!

Yellowjackets: Billy Joel Medley (The River of Dreams, She's Always A Woman, & Uptown Girl)
Yet another opportunity to hear Aaron is always a good thing. No, seriously, this group has got me in their back pocket. They open by proving to us that they definitely still have the African beat thing down (see week one and "Wavin' Flag"). Aaron sounds like Billy Joel. No joke. Oh my heavens. And then they hit "She's Always A Woman" with two fabulous singers before my favorite (I ain't hiding it) slips back in to his Billy Joel crooning. (Dear Ben - I respectively disagree. Dunno about everyone else, but I can pick Aaron's voice out of the group every time.)

Committed (yes, Committed): Chris Brown Medley (Forever, With You, & Yeah 3x)
Not gonna critique at all. (Except perhaps the choice of artist… I am very much not a Chris Brown fan.) Just sit back and enjoy the ear candy :)

I know I say it every week, but I don't envy the judges. It sucks. Also, I am pretty sure that this was one of those weeks when I verbally reacted to the judges' final decision. (We're talking something along the lines of "what?" And I was kinda loud.) I remember thinking as we left that night that it would be weird to not see the sea of yellow shirts in the audience anymore. And I know I am gonna miss their infectious joy for the music. And Aaron. *sniff* They leave us with one of my favorite "comeback" songs, "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba - with their own little VERY FUN twists to it.

Oh my goodness, next week brings us two more genres of fun (country & rock)… and another opportunity to hunt for Sarah and Shaina!

Second Annual National Underrated Basses Week

Well Chasers, it is hard to believe that it has been a full year since we have started celebrating appreciation weeks for the guys! The craziness started with National Underrated Basses Week last year, and it was such a success that we also had appreciation weeks to celebrate the rest of our favorite a cappella men. Starting today, we’re heading into the second annual NUBW! This week is all about highlighting the awesome, talented and funny Randy Stine and Charlie Mechling. We have all of our appreciation activities from last year, plus some new ones that we just added in.

So make sure you are following our twitter account (@NUBW), and like the facebook page (National Underrated Basses Week) to keep up with the excitement. Start the week off right by sharing a video of your favorite #basslove song with everyone on facebook and twitter today, since Monday is musical talent day! Be sure to use the hashtags #NUBW and #basslove on twitter, and tag the facebook page in your facebook posts.

Starting Tuesday, we will be having our first Name that Bass Note contest, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for more information about that. The winner and runner-up will receive signed pictures of our two favorite basses! The full week’s schedule isn’t going to be posted immediately, so stay tuned to find out what is happening for the rest of the week!

Tuesday we will be appreciating Charlie and Randy’s dashing good looks, so while you are posting your videos prepare all of your favorite pictures to share tomorrow. If you don’t have your own pictures, share pictures from others (but please ask for permission and give credit where credit is due!).

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! Print copies now available!

Great news, Chasers! Print copies of SNC Quarter Notes are now available on MagCloud! Thanks to Straight No Chaser's management, we have been given permission to offer print copies up for sale.

But before you go off and order a copy for yourself, one for your significant other, one each for your friends, and one for your intelligent and well-cultured cat, we'd just like to address a few questions or concerns you may have.

Q. Are you making a profit from printing these magazines?
A. Nope. The price that you pay to order the magazine covers production, printing, and shipping through MagCloud. In other words, there is no markup, and we aren't making any money. That being said, we try to find discount codes on the side of the publisher so that we can offer you these magazines for as low a price as possible. MagCloud charges per page, so the thicker the magazine, the more it will cost.

Q. I see that you offer a digital version on MagCloud for free as well. Are there any differences between this one and the one you offer on your site?
A. Yes and no. The content of the magazine is exactly the same. The only difference is that the file size is smaller and the margins are cropped slightly. So, if you were ever reading the magazine on our website or on Scribd, and you noticed that the pages were slightly off-center, it's because we had to format the digital file to accommodate for bleed margins when it's printed. MagCloud automatically crops that out, so what you read is what exactly you would (theoretically) read if it were in print. AND, the version that MagCloud offers has a little MagCloud blurb on the back, and it's supposedly formatted to be compatible for viewing on the iPad. Not that I would know, since this is Shaina writing these Q&As, and I'm anti-Apple, remember? Haha.

Q. Why does the first issue have "Second Edition" printed on the back cover?
A. The first printing of the magazine was a limited edition print, which was only available to the editors, the members and management of SNC, and one lucky contest winner who helped us find Dmitry (John Pius). Other than this and other miniscule differences, there is no difference in the content of the magazine. Though, keep an eye out in future issues; we may hold a contest so you can win a first edition copy of the first issue.

Q. I live in country [XYZ]. Will MagCloud ship the magazine to me, even though I don't live in the United States?
A. Yes! MagCloud ships around the world! But be warned: if you live outside the USA, Canada, and the United Kingdom, you may have to pay income taxes, customs duties, and other fees. You may want to check with your local customs office before ordering. Check MagCloud for more information here.

Q. Is there a minimum or maximum order quantity? Will I be charged more if I just buy one copy?
A. No, but yes. No, because there is no minimum or maximum order quantity; MagCloud prints the magazines as they are ordered, so you can buy as many or as few as you'd like. However, if you buy in bulk (20 or more copies of the same issue), you get a 25% discount. But I don't know what you'd do with 20 copies...

Q. Do I have to sign up with MagCloud in order to order the magazine?
A. Yes. You can use this to track your orders, download digital versions, and the like. But then again, what online retail website doesn't make you register?

We hope you are as excited as we are about this exciting announcement! Please check out MagCloud's FAQ for answers to more questions you may have. If you have any questions that were not answered here or in MagCloud's FAQ, leave us a comment below, and we'll add your question to our FAQ.

Happy reading!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Six

Time for another fabulous week of THE SING OFF!!! The remaining eight groups are going to do battle in the hip-hop realm. Tonight should be amazing :) I am really keeping a close eye on Urban Method, because this is kinda in their wheelhouse. Also, I don't know a ton about hip hop, so I'm not sure my recap is gonna be very detailed. But I'll say what comes to mind :)

Opening Number: "Nothin' On You" - B.o.B. & Bruno Mars
I'm not the biggest hip hop fan, but a cappella has the power to make me enjoy stuff I've not really enjoyed before. This opening song might be one of the few hip hop songs I already liked.... and I officially love this arrangement!!!

Dartmouth Aires: "Club Can't Handle Me" - Flo Rida
WHOA. That "breakdown" during the last chorus? HOT. Those harmonies were a-mah-zing! And Michael is kind of a rockstar. Oh my heavens.

Afro-Blue: "Killing Me Softly" - The Fugees
Kinda cool of them to want to pay homage to Roberta Flack in this cover of a cover of her song ;) I LOVE the harmonies (but that kinda goes without saying anymore when it comes to this group). I would so buy this track.

The Collective: "Give Me Everything" - Pitbull
I was a bit worried about these guys, but they sound awesome! The beat rocks, the leads are hot. They added their touch of soul to a club song and I really think they pulled it off!

Vocal Point: "I'll Be Missing You" - Puff Daddy
Kind of expected to cry… and I am excited to see their take on the song. I hope they don't get reamed for changing it up too much. I LOVE this arrangement… and Ben… Ben Ben Ben. Heartfelt (obviously), and beautiful. And I am choked up.

The judges have decided that this week, the two bottom groups will compete in a sing off at the end of the show. The group from our first set of competitors that is heading to the final sing off is The Collective. I honestly don't know that I could have picked a group from this four. I can tell this is gonna be a hard elimination.

Urban Method: "Airplanes" - B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams
Is it bad that I have no words? That was kind of fabulous. I'm not their biggest fan, but this song was HOT. Myke was right on with that rap, but the girls could have been a bit stronger. I did love the sounds that were coming from the background :)

(just a note before we continue: the judges are kinda cracking me up this week. so is Nick. Oh my heavens. I heart Shawn, Ben, Sara, and Nick muchly.)

Pentatonix: "Love Lockdown" - Kanye West
So, I've never heard the original of this song because I tend to avoid all things Kanye. Avi is a beast on the bass. I mean, I can feel the bass thumping through my tv. I love it when that happens! Kevin rocks the beat, Kirstie and Mitch bring some tight harmonies to back up the ever-fabulous Scott on the lead. I never have anything bad to say about this group. And I truly think they are the ones to beat.

Delilah: "How To Love" - Lil Wayne
This could be a tough one for them… let's see how it goes! Geena has a gorgeous voice… and I'm glad she had the chance to step out from behind the VP role. A very interesting arrangement. I really like it :) ((P.S. - Jo rocks the bass… for serious.)

Yellowjackets: "The Show Goes On" - Lupe Fiasco
Great great great song choice for these guys. Now, I'm never sure I'm gonna be excited about a performance that doesn't feature my Yellowjacket darling, Aaron Sperber. But, oh my heavens… I love this! Jamal rocks it out on his rap. The breakdown was beautiful. I'm kinda in love with this group right now.

Another tough decision for the judges with this set of groups… but the Yellowjackets will be joining The Collective in the final sing-off, with each group doing their take on Nelly's "Just A Dream."

I know I've said this before… I don't envy the judges on nights like this. I'd hate to have to decide between two different arrangements of the same song… two arrangements that were awesome.

My heart is kinda broken. I love The Collective. I love the idea behind the group. (And I've been a Rachael Lampa fan for years!) I am so bummed that they didn't get any further. But they definitely left a special bright smile on this competition as they sang their way out with "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan.

Next week, we get a special Halloween treat coupled with some sick superstar medleys! We also get to see Committed! (And we'll play another rousing game of find Sarah & Shaina in the audience!) See you all next week! And please leave your thoughts about this week's show below!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Five

Time for a new fabulous week of THE SING OFF!!! Out ten groups have combined for one hot night of a cappella that promises to bring some fabulous talent and a roller coaster of emotions!

The opening number, Lionel Richie's "All Night Long", is a beautifully full wall of dynamic sound. I LOVE this song and I love it for a cappella. Tonight definitely doesn't disappoint! (Nick says 100 voices… WOW.)

Tonight it's guilty pleasure night. I love guilty pleasure songs! I probably won't write as much for each performance this time (unless I totally disagree with the judges on something). Let's do this!!!

Yellowjackets - "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls
You don't know how happy I am to see them do this song. *giggle* Oh my goodness, I haven't been disappointed. Not only did I love the sounds, but their personality, the moves, oh my heavens. And that ending!!!!!

Delilah - "What A Feeling" by Irene Cara
I love Candace. However, she sounds a bit shaky on this intro. I mean, I know she's better than she's sounding on this song. It's kind of a shock to me. Her solo aside, I love what I am hearing behind her!

North Shore - "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis & the News
Kinda would have loved to hear them try "Mmmmmbop" too, but I LOVE this song. And I am LOVING what they've done with it! And I'll say it again… I love Guy. He always makes me smile!

The Collective - "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor
Oh my goodness, they are taking on my karaoke song!!!!! Smart move starting with Ruby and letting Rachael add the ooomph before pitting them together. I love the arrangement! I especially love their little breakdown! They will totally survive!

Dartmouth Aires - "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield
Brendan. Oh Brendan. I heart you. So, this wasn't the best Aires performance, but I still loved every second. And Brendan ROCKED that solo!

It's time for one of two eliminations tonight. Again, I would hate to be a judge. And this is a cut that I'm not so sure I agree with. If I had been on the panel, to be honest, I would have probably sent Delilah home. North Shore and their infectious fun-loving style will be missed!!! (and, I'll be honest, I shed a few tears… I'm especially gonna miss Guy.) Goodnight, sweethearts :)

So, have I mentioned just how much I love guilty pleasures week?!?!?!? :)

Afro-Blue - "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston
I loved seeing them feature all of their lovely ladies! And, oh heavens, I love this groove! The jazz chords on the chorus, the soul train dance line… it was so fabulous!

Pentatonix - "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles
Definitely wise of them to change to this song. It suits their style and abilities better, I think. Besides, I am enjoying watching Avi do his robotic walk. :) Mitch sounds gorgeous, Scott nails the lead. It's the perfect song for them! It was SICK!
P.S. - I think I'm gonna steal Sara's "ear candy" term. Don't be surprised if you see it in future blogs!

Deltones - "Listen To Your Heart" by Roxette
This is a song that I'm kind of over (I blame my brother). I wish I could put that aside, but the song choice already makes it forgettable for me. Their harmonies are tight, Courtney sounds fabulous, but it's still not as entertaining to me.

Urban Method - "Poison" by Bell Biv Devoe
I'm gonna have to preface any comments on this song by saying that when I saw the song choice, I immediately thought of Straight No Chaser's "Billie Jean/Poison" mashup. It's gonna be hard to not compare this performance with SNC. But I'll try to.
TROY!!!! Once again, he blows me away! I am loving the backgrounds on this... they are so on it! And Tony... that bass!

P.S. - Ben rapping made my night. :)

Vocal Point - "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins
Yay, I love it when groups show off just how many talented soloists they have… and hold their arrangement together, which Vocal Point totally does here. Ross and Jake sounded A-MAH-ZING! If people can't understand why I love these guys after this performance, then they must have bats in their soul or something.

Another elimination. No one likes these. But I still felt like maybe the Deltones still hadn't gasped on to what the judges kept saying about the energy level. They always had a great sound, but there also needs to be an entertainment factor. And I can't speak for anyone else, but I have to be honest that when talking about the show, I often forget about them and I think that speaks volumes about that entertainment factor. Still, I wish we could have seen that fun from the Deltones. I know they have it in them.

Next week, our top 8 groups take on hip hop… Urban Method has a big advantage, so it'll be interesting to see if they can bring it! Can't wait for next week! (It also looks like Vocal Point is gonna make me cry.)

Please comment below and let me know what you thought of this week!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Four

Before I start my recap, I just want to remind you that our newest edition of the SNC Quarter Notes is up for reading, including my preview of voices to watch on The Sing Off. You can check it out here!

I wish I had been in the audience this evening. *sigh* Anyway...

Opening number Rhythm of Love,” Plain White T's. Gonna start with "I LOVE THIS SONG!!!" And I love how they've arranged it for the groups to sing tonight. The "guitar" reminds me a bit of The Warblers' ukulele on Hey Soul Sister. And I hear a muted horn (Kevin from the Pentatonix!) And I love it. And the stage looks so stinkin' sunny!

Why hello, Nick Lachey. And he's wearing another gray-based shirt (this looks like a violet-gray). And hello to our fabulouso judges: Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, and Shawn Stockman!

Like last week, tonight the groups are each tackling two songs - one current radio hit and a hit from the 1960s.

First up, the Deltones. Looks like they had a hard week with their Gaga tune, "The Edge of Glory." Soloist Courtney Penta battled being sick and it only showed in a few spots, so major kudos to her for sticking with it! The overall sound was great, but like Sara commented on, their physicality didn't really add anything to the performance. It's one thing to sing amazingly, it's another to do so and look like you're having fun. I'd love to see them appear to be having fun!

Ahhhh, Scott Hoying. I mean, um, Pentatonix. (Yes, I think you're seeing a new voice crush developing. I adore Scott's voice.) These club kids are taking on the queen of autotune, Ke$ha, with "Your Love Is My Drug." Again, they are totally showing off the depth of this group, with Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch soloing while the fabulous Avi & Kevin bring the remix in. (And yes, Shawn, I am a Scott fan.)

Bring on The Collective! I love that they are rehearsing in the hot tub. That is awesomesauce. So, I've never heard Far East Movement's "Rocketeer" before. Oh, Rachael, I have missed your voice girl. However, I hope you didn't kill it by singing with acute laryngitis! There were some weak spots in the solo because of her illness. But the whole performance, from Ruby's beginning, through Sam's breakdown, to Rachael's last note was fabulous and a definite improvement on week one!

I am so ready for North Shore and their take on Bruno Mars' "Lazy Song" (or should I say Bruno Mahs)… Gotta say, I didn't realize they were doing this on the show this week. I had seen a "for-fans-only" video that they posted on their Facebook of them doing this in a laid-back rehearsal setting. And now they're doing it on the show tonight!! I feel like I got a free preview! And the performance is better than the preview :) Guy Chiapponi is, like, superhuman. Sing, whistle, sing… when does he breathe?!?! Loved every second of this performance!

The Dartmouth Aires are taking on one of my current favorites, "Animal" by Neon Trees. And they kinda knocked it out. Soloist Brendan was super energetic (a couple of pitchy spots, but still awesome). Not really much more to say. These guys are certainly bringing it this week!

Time to round out the first set with Sonos and their take on Coldplay's "Viva La Vida." They mention not having a bass. I know that they once had six members not long before The Sing Off, so not only are they without their effects pedals, they are probably still adjusting to the 5-member format. I love how simple this arrangement sounded. It didn't sound empty, but it also didn't sound overloaded like many aca arrangements of the piece. Katharine really knocked out that bass, Ben killed the vocal percussion as usual, and even with some pitchy spots, it sounded fabulous!

Our groups have done their current hits, now it's time to hear them take on some of the great hits of the 1960's… groovy! (Like last week, I'm not gonna comment as much on these performances, just a word or two…) (P.S. - One problem with the pre-record is Nick's reference to The Playboy Club, which has been cancelled. Oooops.)

Pentatonix: “Piece of My Heart,” Janis Joplin
I kinda can't get enough of Scott. They had to do something to make this song fun (I appreciate it, cause I'm not really a fan of this song). I love the reggae feel and Kevin with his totally sick and dirty horn solo! Love it!

Deltones: “You Can't Hurry Love,” The Supremes
OK, now a few of them look like they're having fun. But there are still faces in the pack that aren't emoting. And maybe it's just the bad luck of the camera finding them right when they aren't smiling. It was still a good performance, but I have to admit that for me, they are becoming forgettable.

Side Note: Dear Nick, I love it when you're funny. :)

North Shore: “Unchained Melody,” Righteous Brothers
This is one of those things where you kind of expect North Shore to have an edge simply because this is in their wheelhouse. So, I almost wanna be harder on them because they have to take a style they are already doing and make it… better. Guy knocks it out, Shawn gives him a standing O before the song is even over. It was the perfect 60s tribute and we all knew it would be!

Side Note: I'd love to see Ben Folds swoon like a little girl.

The Collective: “Hold On, I'm Coming,” Sam & Dave
Is it bad that all I wanna say is "that is ridiculously hot"… cause that's what I wanna say. Wowsa!

Sonos: “I Want You Back,” Jackson 5
I am going into this performance expecting to love it, because I've heard their arrangement. It's not "60's-ish" at all, though the song is from that era. But I am having to remind myself that the version they do that I love had 6 people and effects pedals. So, this is going to be interesting. They gave Rachel the total solo (instead of splitting with Chris like in their recording) so that Chris could cover the bass. And I love it. LOVE. I love that they took something we all know and love and made it totally 100% theirs. And deep down, I knew they were gonna get ripped for not doing it the classic way. And it kills me. I wish more people got them.

Dartmouth Aires: “Pinball Wizard,” The Who
Michael is fabulous as ever, knocking out the Daltrey lead. Couldn't say it any better than Sara: "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats."

This is probably the first time this season that I'm mildly annoyed by the decision. First off, I think the Deltones should have been in the bottom two instead of The Collective. Secondly, it annoys me that innovation ends up being a mark against Sonos. Especially because there are other innovative groups putting their spins on songs and being praised for it. It's really frustrating to me.
I love that they left with Boyz II Men's "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday"… and kinda chuckled when Shawn hid his face. Too soon, judges. It was too soon for them.

Come back next week as the remaining ten groups from both brackets (listed below for those who've lost track) combine for one aca-awesome night of 80's & 90's guilty pleasures!
Afro-Blue
The Collective
Dartmouth Aires
Delilah
Deltones
North Shore
Pentatonix
Urban Method
Vocal Point
Yellowjackets

I leave you with a link to the video of that Honda commercial I mentioned last week... :)

S.J. Signs In: The Sing Off 3, Episode 3

With the competition getting close to the top ten, who are your favorite aca-allstars? The stakes will only get higher, and with upsets so early in the game, this season is pulling to be the most controversial/exciting yet.

· The boys of Vocal Point are pulling in strong with outstanding performances. Consistency is the key! I'm not a "Belieiber," by any means, but VP showed an attitude and persona that the crowd absolutely adored. I'll have to say that one of my favorite performances was "The Way You Look Tonight." Jake Hunsaker is a classic crooner with stylings beyond his college years.
· Oh, Delilah. I'll admit; the precursor to the performance...as well as the first few moments of the performance ("Whadaya Want From Me") had me a bit worried. I'm in absolute LOVE with ths group, and think that the overall performance wasn't bad. "Heat Wave" had the crowd in a fever, and Kendall Young has a killer voice.
· Troy Horne is an amazing human being. (Do you know who the House Jacks are? www.housejacks.com) So multifaceted…you can’t help but be drawn to him. I loved both performances from Urban Method. Myke Charles has a commanding presence, and I can’t wait to see even more versatility from him. The award for amazing arrangements, and, of course, for putting such an incredible group together goes to none other than the incredible Tony Huerta.
· There was absolutely nothing wrong you can say about Afro Blue’s jazzy version of “American Boy.” Well, besides the fact that it isn’t recorded and breaking album sales yet. Christie Dashiell: Could you be any more charming? The arrangement was flawless, and all of the voices, lead and background, were in perfect, harmonious sync.
· It’s no secret. It’s easy for big collegiate groups to have stage presence. But the University of Rochester Yellowjackets are both a crazy, energy packed power ball, and a classy act (with great instrumental mimicking). I absolutely love watching/listening to these guys. Looks like the collegiate groups are out in full force this year! (Aaron Sperber: point.)
· Kinfolk 9. I’ll have to say…this was the most controversial group for me. On one had, they had amazing moments with great song choices…other times, I thought their performances were noticeably lacking. I feel that they didn’t consistently come together as a whole. Jenilee Reyes is a great soloist, but I would have loved to see her really let it all go and belt it out. In any case, Moi Navarro is a rockstar. “Let It Be”.was.beautiful. However, someone had to go home…and to some viewers’ surprise, the family of 9 were sent home. (I loved their swan song…their twist on Loser=sick. Best of luck, guys!)

Next week is said to be amazing; perhaps another upset? I can’t wait!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Three

Welcome to night three of The Sing Off!!! I was actually in the audience for this!!!!!!!! So, I'll be looking for me and Shaina when I can. Also, if I remember something from the taping, I'll mention it. So, let's get going!

The cover of “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane was gorgeous. BTW, the opening number is the only number that they perform more than once in an evening, for camera angles, etc. Also, see the audience waving those lights? We also did a take without the lights :) And the song sounded amazing both times. I mean, wow.

Ben, Sara, and Shawn look awesome, as usual :) And Nick is looking good!

Tonight the groups are each tackling two songs - one current radio hit and a hit from the 1960s.

First up, Vocal Point. I was sad to hear that Ben's father passed away. It's obvious that the rest of the group misses him and feels for him. These guys are truly a family. :( McKay was in a boyband. Oh my heavens. And they are performing Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never." Shaina groaned at this point. No joke. But, they knocked it out of the park! Keith's lead vocal was hot (hotter than Bieber, baby!) and the choreo was fabulous. Ben Folds couldn't stop smiling, Sara loved it, and Shawn was impressed! I was screaming my rear off in the stands. See, Shaina and I had discovered THAT EVENING that this group that we already loved was in the competition when we saw someone waiting in line with a Vocal Point sign. We squealed. Literally squealed. Fangirl moment while in line to get in. :)

Next up, it's the gorgeous & talented girls of Delilah. I can't for the life of me understand why Kendall shaved the one part of her head. Anyway, they execute the most haunting version of "Whatya Want From Me" by Adam Lambert (originally a P!nk song). And a huge shout out to Jo who sings a mad bass!!! I just remember having chills when I heard it live… and the goosebumps showed up again tonight!

So, Shaina and I are sitting there watching Urban Method prep and I feel like I've seen the one guy (Troy Horne) before, but I can't place him. Until I get home and look up Urban Method and Troy. Um, HOUSE JACKS! Anyway, they are tackling "Just Can't Get Enough" by Black Eyed Peas. Not my favorite song, but they could change my mind. I don't know why I am remembering this, but I felt a tad awkward watching the dancing during the beginning of the song. Too sexy, maybe? *shrugs* Anyway, Tony is a beast on the bass. Oh my heavens. Watching this now, it actually sounds a bit better on TV than I remember it sounding that night.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED Afro-Blue from the moment they started their song this week. I'd never heard "American Boy" by Estelle before. I'm probably spoiled for the original by their awesomesauce jazzy take on it. Christie opens that song with the awesome scat and I have the best kind of shivers. And then they break it down, with their album scratch and beat and my goosebumps get goosebumps! And Shawn Stockman is a melty mess in his chair! "Do you know how hard it is to scat?" And I am in my seat wanting to yell "heck yeah, I know! It's HARD!!!" Sara is starting to let loose her potty mouth :) And Ben is being his fabulously intellectual self! Probably my favorite performance from the first set.

Side note: The Honda commercial with the family singing "Crazy Train" a cappella… LOVE. Oh my goodness! I tried to find a video to link to, but it must be too new... couldn't find one!

Shaina and I were sitting in a section filled with a bunch of yellow-shirted people. Yellowjackets friends and family :) You find yourself becoming a fan of the group because of the energy surrounding their biggest supporters. THEN, they sing. And I love them even more. Oh my heavens, Aaron Sperber has a beautimous voice. And this group has heart beyond measure! They rocked out Taio Cruz's "Dynamite", making it way fun for me, both then and now! I just remember the energy from the stage being so high. (Sara isn't exaggerating: it sounded like a track in there on that song… it was great!)

Time for Kinfolk 9. Have I mentioned that they have a "Warbler" in their group? I kinda love that he played an a cappella singer on TV, and now he's doing it for real. Anyway, they had a great groove on "Price Tag" by Jessie J, and a fantastic beat thanks to the fabulous Kari! I know I really embraced the Kinfolk after this performance :)

Our groups have done their current hits, now it's time to hear them take on some of the great hits of the 1960's… groovy! (I'm not gonna comment as much on these performances, just a word or two…)

Delilah: “Heatwave” by Martha & the Vandellas
so fun! not the most dynamic arrangement they've done, but they definitely stuck with the theme :)

Urban Method: “Dance to the Music” by Sly and the Family Stone
This one was SO MUCH FUN live! Like "dancing in my seat" fun! And, dude, Troy, LOW and HIGH in the same song!!!!! Wooooo!

Vocal Point: “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra
Oh, Jake Hunsaker… you crooner. I've kinda been waiting all this time for tonight's episode to air so I can get this song on iTunes. Jazz-fabulous!

Afro-Blue: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye
Smokin' hot. Seriously. And, being an SNC fan, the danger of a comparison. There isn't one. Two different spins. If someone thinks one is better than the other, then it's a matter of personal taste… jazz v r&b. Cause this is still jazz heavy. And awesomesauce!

Yellowjackets: “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” by Frankie Valli
Aaron Sperber, you can serenade me anytime you want to, honey. Oh mylanta. And Jamal looks so precious with his wand! I really wanted to be Sara Bareilles there at the end. Except, I probably would have become a puddle.

Kinfolk 9: “Let It Be” by The Beatles
Moi. Awesome. So, um, Moi is tha bomb. Just saying. His voice is awesome. And they kinda turned the song a bit gospel-y there behind him! Their best, by far. Oh my heavens. (yeah, I use that a lot)

This was a LONG night. After the final performance, the judges left to deliberate. And they were gone for an eternity! The groups were brought out on the stage to get set up for the elimination. And there was music playing in the room on loud speakers. At one point, "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson was playing. The singers on stage were in their little clumps, singing (even beatboxing) to the song, as were we up in the audience. It was kinda fun. About 1 hour and 45 minutes after leaving us, the judges came back. 15 minutes later, they finally filmed this elimination. We were all exhausted. And I was soooooooooooo bummed to see Kinfolk 9 leave the show so soon. But I loved their choice of swan song - "Loser" by Beck.

If Nick looks tired to you, he is. It was a long night.

Join us next week for bracket #2 and their take on the hits of the 60s and today!

Sarah's Ramblings: The Sing Off - Episode Two

Hello again, Sing Off fans! Ready to recap another fine week of aca-awesomeness! Let's get going with Bracket #2!

The opening number was "Sing" by My Chemical Romance. Wicked awesome. The energy was fabulous and we got to see some of the amazing soloists that were featured tonight!
Um, I may have also seen Shaina and my brother in the audience…

BEN!
SARA!
SHAWN!
These are our fabulous judges! They make tough decisions every week. Ben says they base it off of whether they think there's potential for records to be made by the groups... But enough stalling, it's time for the music!

DARTMOUTH AIRES: these boys are fabulous. And one of them reminds me of a kid at school. Let me introduce you to the golden voice of Michael. Oh my heavens!! Their take on Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" was so full and just amazing! And the outfits were rather loud… :)

PENTATONIX: (pssssst, I think these guys may be the group to beat.) (and I just saw the back of Shaina's head.) You know a group is awesome if they can make me like a song that I don't care for. I am not a fan of Katy Perry's "E.T.", but this was WOW. And I love that they showcased each group member during their performance. Cause I don't think I have a favorite member. They all rock. Mitch's voice is so sweet and pure; Kirstie is rockin' her low end; Kevin's VP is HOT; Avi Avi Avi… big bad bass :) And then there's Scott. Fabulous Scott with his hot voice (and his USC connections!) You can't not like this group!

MESSIAH'S MEN: I have a sweet spot in my heart for African-style music. I love the sound they've got and the story of how music got them through the tough times. Their take on Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" mixed in their Afro-centric sound with the soul of the piece. And it made me smile! LOVE these guys! (and we just saw my bro in the audience!)

SONOS: this was the other group I was excited about seeing in the competition!!! We're seeing them without their effects pedals, and they are still AWESOME on Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", which they've completely turned on it's ear! I love simply everything about this performance :)

The inevitable difficult goodbye moment. I knew who was going home and it still sucked. :( Goodbye, Messiah's Men. I would of loved to see how much more you could have done! Your swan song, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", was absolutely beautiful.

THE COLLECTIVE: First off, they have Rachael Lampa. I heart her. Anyway, their arrangement of Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" is smoking. Ruby Amanfu adds a bit of sultry soul to the lead. And while it has echoes of the original song, it is totally different. And I love hearing groups reinvent a song! Can't wait to see what else they can do.

**Apparently, Shawn Stockman is a sucker for altos. I promptly introduced myself on Twitter.

SOUL'D OUT: "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In" - Hair
Hey, I know someone from Wilsonville! Anyway, these high schoolers are tackling some trippy stuff… ;) And I was kinda flashing back to my own high school experience in show choir. I love their full sound!

Quick side note: heard the tail end of a commercial for the show "Parenthood" and the song sounded a cappella. Another friend asked me about it as well, so I looked for it. It's by Courtney Jones and it's called "Weightless". It sounds amazing, really… just thought I'd recommend it! (Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izjnZMjWZqk)

NORTH SHORE: "Runaround Sue" - Dion
There's something comforting about a group of guys old enough to be my dad wearing their Hawaiian shirts singing some fine doo wop. Add that they're from BAHSTON :) Guy Chiapponi, oh my heavens, has an amazing voice. These guys are so much fun to watch!

DELTONES: "Feels Like Home" - Randy Newman
The soloist on this song pierced me the moment she started singing. I love this song and their arrangement of it was absolutely hauntingly beautiful.

We have to say goodbye to someone else… :( I really liked this second half so much, and enjoyed Soul'd Out so much. Can you imagine what they could do with a bit more maturity on those voices? WOW. Sad that they're going home...

Can't wait to see next week's show… keep an eye out for me and Shaina in the audience!

And PLEASE leave your own feedback about the episode below!

Shaina Sounds Off: Premiere, Part 1

The first eight groups of the season come together to perform P!nk's "F**kin' Perfect." Image courtesy of NBC.

The title for my review series probably sounds like one of those lame puns that Nick Lachey's writer comes up with. (Poor Nick...) Anyway, I apologize for taking so long to post this review, but I was working hard on yet another review for The Sing-Off for the Neon Tommy, USC Annenberg's award-winning digital news site, which you can read here. I hope to continue covering the season there, but we'll see if they'll let me. (Haha, I'm a newbie.) However, that article is more geared towards those who have yet to see the show and is mostly a summary of the episode. SNCQN gets my (probably unwarranted) opinion on the night's events. So let's get started, shall we?

The group performance of Pink's "F-in' Perfect" was energetic and great as they usually are, and I loved the rap part of the song. It was great to see each of the groups featured in the song in short snippets, and from this performance, I was able to make preliminary judgments on each of the groups and how I thought they would fare tonight in the competition.

It was great seeing how well Sara fit in with the Sing-Off family, and I know that she's going to be a fantastic replacement for Nicole. At least we can count on Sara saying something of musical worth, being critical of the performance, and not making weird sexual jokes... Oh, wait. Scratch that last one. (But for some reason, I'm more willing to forgive Sara.) And her potty mouth hasn't begun to show itself... Yet... (Or maybe the editing crew did a REALLY good job.)

First up, the Yellowjackets. I know the song that they performed very well; UCLA's Scattertones came to 'SC to compete at Absolut A Cappella and the ICCAs last year, and that song was a part of their set (and very lively). I thought that their arrangement really brought out the "African" feel, especially in the bass and background vocals. It was a lively performance, and the fact that they waved around scarves with Kenya's national colors was really awesome. However, they didn't really seem that much different from the all-male collegiate a cappella groups from past seasons, namely the Beelzebubs from season one and On the Rocks from season two. Though I think that they're good enough to make it rather far in the competition, they don't really have anything that sets them apart, and musicality can only go so far.

I thought the Fannin Family actually did a really great job. Maria NAILED the lead vocals, and their blend was so smooth, as I'd expected. Though, because they're a family group, I have a feeling that they aren't seasoned performers. Their movements on stage felt a little static to me, and the lack of choreography probably didn't help much. I also noticed that they didn't have a vocal percussionist, so that, along with not having a "real" bass, made the song (in terms of its arrangement) not as lively as it should have been.

I absolutely loved Afro-Blue's jazzy version of "Put Your Records On." There's something about jazz groups, and the jazz sound in general, that makes me happy. Keep your eye (and ear) on Christie, the soloist. Not only is she a great soloist and fantastic alto, but she can SCAT. That's all I'll say. The arrangement was great because it showcased the group's jazzy sound without being overly complicated, and it really showed off their group personality. Also, Ben's opening comment after the group performed was so awkward and weird. I love Ben.

Delilah was the surprise of the night. I generally am not a fan of all-female groups; almost always, they lack a firm foundation, in terms of vocal percussion and bass, and the highs always sound shrill. Their arrangements tend to be top-heavy, and it gets annoying to listen to. (Trust me on this; I speak from experience in both SINGING in all-female ensembles and LISTENING to all-female aca groups.) However, Delilah solved ALL of these issues. Not only do they have an AMAZING bass and vocal percussionist, but their ARRANGEMENTS are the key. Rather than having the girls in the ensemble singing syllables to imitate instruments, they act more like a bunch of back-up singers to Amy, singing the lyrics of the song and harmonizing with the lead. They left the bass and beatbox to suffice for the background, driving the tempo, and when the rest of the group did come in on random syllables, it wasn't overly annoying because we only got a small amount of it. (Side note: did anyone else notice Deke Sharon running around in the background of their interview in his bright green plaid shirt? Haha!)

I wasn't surprised that the bottom two were the YellowJackets and Fannin Family. The competition is stiff and the other two groups gave very memorable performances. Ultimately, I agree with the judges; Fannin Family just happened to be the weakest group of the bunch, and so they were sent home.

On to the next set of four!

Urban Method was interesting for me. I thought that it was interesting that they're a hip-hop a cappella group, and I immediately started to wonder how they will handle the judges' challenges, which force the groups outside of their comfort zones. However, this first performance was good. The emotion was there, and they really performed the song well. However, I didn't think that the actual arrangement was all that great. It was what you expect, which isn't exactly a winning formula for me.

Cat's Pajamas are really a fun act to watch. I'm sure that I'd love to watch them perform live (one day, I'll head to Branson!), and in light of what I'd heard before them, I thought that the judges' comments were a little unfair. As seasoned performers, I can't help but think that "Some Kind of Wonderful" might be one of those songs ingrained in their minds and that their constant performance of the song might have something to do with their not connecting to the audience to the extent that the judges wanted.

Kinfolk 9... Okay, let me say something. I just found out that their bass isin USC's Trojan Men, and I'd seen him direct the group, so when I saw him, I thought he looked vaguely familiar (but of course, the bright clothes were a radical change in wardrobe from the suit and tie I usually saw him in). AND, tonight, I found out that Moi, the lead singer, sings at the church of one of Overflow's newest members. Weird. But anyway, I thought that their performance was very emotional, though I agree with the judges; some spots had blending issues.

And now for... VOCAL POINT. These guys are my favorite of this bracket, hands down. They are so sweet and awesome and CUTE. When Sarah and I found out that they were competing this season, we had a mini freak-out and squealed like five-year-olds in a candy paradise. Seriously. These guys are great, and I was bummed that I missed them at the ICCA Semifinals last year at USC (they ultimately came in second place to Pitch Slapped). They always put on a show and are great musicians. These guys apparently got a very long standing ovation (that they had to cut, of course), and as the last performance of the night, this is INCREDIBLY commendable. As a frequent Sing-Off audience member (and I'm sure Sarah can attest), as the taping progresses, it gets more and more exhausting for not only the performers and judges, but also for the audience members. I mean, we applaud and yell a LOT. So the fact that the audience was willing to give them such a long ovation at the end of a very long night after having been there for about six hours (I'd be willing to bet this was taped around 11pm, maybe later) is EXTREMELY impressive. Yes, I love these guys. Yes, I want them to win. Yes, I briefly considered transferring there or pursuing a master's degree at BYU. (Too bad they don't have a master's program in Public Relations...)

And now yet another elimination. As much as I hate to admit it, I can see why the judges chose to eliminate Cat's Pajamas. Since they're able to make a living in singing a cappella and because they're already professional musicians, they probably thought that they'd feel less guilty about sending them home than if they had sent Kinfolk 9 home (since they basically epitomize the "struggling musician" stereotype). Furthermore, because Cat's Pajamas are so professional, they probably thought it would be harder for them to fix the flaws in their performance, since it had more to do with abstract ideas (as opposed to Kinfok 9's pitch problems, which can be solved over time). I sighed as I watch Cat's Pajamas sing "Bye Bye Love" as they left the competition.

In my opinion, all of the groups this year would have been good enough to make it to the top four in previous seasons. The competition is stiff, the groups are better than ever before, and the stakes are even higher (even though Nick didn't mention whether or not the winners get the Sing-Off trophy, haha). If this is a good indicator of what is to come, the third season of The Sing-Off has a promising future, and I can't wait to see what the next eight groups have up their sleeves (even if I've already seen it)!

What did you think about the first part of the premiere? Did you agree with the judges' choices to send home? Do you have a favorite in the competition yet? Weigh in below!
